White on White

Posted in Huntington Beach, Photography by Bridget Casas on August 3, 2009

This photograph was taken with my Lensbaby 2.0 with the +10 macro filter. I showed you the buds the other day so now I show you the orchid as it is just beginning to bloom. To me it kind of looks like an alien space ship! Willie mentioned the body snatchers! I think it looks good and I like the white on white look. 333/365

Cosmos, Not the Drink But the Flower

Posted in Family, Huntington Beach, Personal by Bridget Casas on August 2, 2009

Isn’t this a very pretty flower? I took this photo at Larry and Shelley’s. Shelley grew it from seeds and it is so pretty. I really like the thin, delicate stem. Shelley said you can buy them at a nursery already started but that the stems tend to be thicker and not as pretty. I agree, I don’t think it would be as pretty. It is a very pretty purple/pink color and this particular one is more purple. The leaves are a very beautiful deep green. Quite often it is difficult to take photos of flowers in nature because of the ocean breeze – especially one with a thin stem!

Lensbaby Macro Shot

Posted in Huntington Beach, Photography by Bridget Casas on July 30, 2009

I am so proud of this photograph! I thought I would try my +10 macro filter on my Lensbaby 2.0. I had only used the +4 macro filter before. Now the +10 is  my favorite. I was finally able to get a good focal point and so lucky I was able to get this bee. Isn’t it great? When I went outside, there were a few bees buzzing around my basil plant that is very large and has a lot of flowers on it. I will work on getting closer to the bee next time, but they really like to buzz around a lot!

This is a great Lensbaby macro photo…

We had some of the fresh basil from that plant on the spaghetti I made earlier in the week. It was great! The day started out very overcast and even a little chilly. I have been waking up early, so when I went out to get the newspaper at 5:30, it was pretty cool outside, and oh so nice and quiet! Willie took the dogs for a good walk today at Central Park. He said Donnan was really good until they went into the dog park. Why can’t he learn from Kyla? Willie said Kyla kept an eye on Donnan and didn’t go very far away from him. The Dodger’s are playing the Cardinals – has not been a good series for them! We’ll see how it goes!

Look What Is In My Own Backyard

Posted in Huntington Beach, Photography by Bridget Casas on July 9, 2009

This is a beautiful orchid plant a neighbor gave us over a year ago. Willie is taking care of it and as you can see, he is doing a mighty fine job of it. I always thought you had to take very special care of orchids and not just anyone could do it. I guess Willie has the special knack! He counted the buds today and there are 15, aside from what has already bloomed  and shows in this photo.

A gorgeous orchid in my own backyard…

I took a break from transferring files today to take Kyla to the dog park. She had a good time. I feel so bad that I cannot take Donnan with us. He does not understand why he is left behind. I do not know what to do. Can anyone help me? Saw the Dodgers beat the Mets today so that was good.  What are you going to do this coming week-end? I will be taking some photos Saturday morning of a friends 2 year old little boy at Central Park. It should be a fun morning. Not sure for Sunday. I may go to a friends “jewelry” party (kind of like a Tupperware party, but jewelry instead). We’ll see.

A Staircase of Red Geraniums

Posted in Photography by Bridget Casas on July 4, 2009

I realized as I was downloading this image to my gallery page (I always do that first), that this is the fourth post in a row of a Lensbaby photo! I promise to do something else tomorrow. I thought the red flowers looked very pretty and appropriate for this 4th of July holiday.  These flowers are all in pots along a staircase, again at Fashion Island. They looked beautiful and I could not resist them.

Red flowers for this July 4th…

Well, the first firecracker went off at 4:35 P.M.  Both dogs are panting and we just turned on the TVs very loudly. Willie had the dogs over at Larry’s for a couple of hours running in their backyard and then took them for a walk. They were very tired when they got home (Willie included) but I tried to play games with them to keep them awake (the dogs). I want them all very tired for later tonight. A benadryl will help that. Help me get us through the night!

My First Gladiola

Posted in Huntington Beach, Photography by Bridget Casas on June 24, 2009

This very pretty gladiola is growing in Larry and Shelley’s backyard. Shelley was not aware that it was there until it started blooming. Her mother has a beautiful yard and Shelley certainly inherited her mother’s green thumb! She has some very pretty flowers. Please check out all of my latest  wedding photos. I am very proud of them. I am hoping it will help me to acquire some new business. Do you have any suggestions that could help me?

A purpily/pink gladiola…

Willie took Kyla and Donnan for a long walk today. They should be home pretty soon. We are going to have Mexican Pizza for dinner. It will be good. We are both big fans of Mexican food!  I would love to have beautiful flowers in my yard, but I do not have the patience to give them all the attention they need. I am busy enough with photography, real estate, Willie and the dogs, that I don’t think I could fit any more into my schedule. Larry would not understand this – he doesn’t think I do anything!

Another Lensbaby Attempt

Posted in Family, Huntington Beach, Photography by Bridget Casas on June 21, 2009

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there reading this post! We just got back from a lunch time barbecue at Larry and Shelley’s. It was some great chicken that Larry cooked with his own special rub and barbecue sauce. Shelley’s mother and step father were there along with Willie’s dad. It was a beautiful day with a nice little breeze. This photo is from their back yard. Shelley pointed out to me this one very small, almost hidden bright pink calla lily. I don’t think I have ever seen this color before.

Focusing deep inside the middle of this flower…

I had taken my camera and wanted to show Shelley my new lens. She seemed  interested as was her mother, Lorraine. I was trying to focus on the stamen and I think I just about got it! I think it is actually and little deeper inside, but I am happy with it! The Dodgers are playing the Angels right now on ESPN – no score. I hope you all have had a great week-end. A new week is starting and we all need to accomplish something really good. Let us all tap into our creative side and see what we can come up with! Have a good week!

A Green Burst of Star Light

Posted in Huntington Beach, Photography by Bridget Casas on June 16, 2009

Isn’t this an interesting plant? Of course, I do not know what it is. I do like to photograph plants and flowers, however, I very seldom know what they are. I wish my mom were around to ask – she would know. I miss her every day. I took this photo at a friends yard and if I had had some scissors with me, I would have trimmed those few brown tips! I did up the green in saturation a little so they would stand out a little more. It is a beautiful plant even without that boost.

Have you ever seen anything this symetrical…?

It was another great day in Huntington Beach today.  A beautiful blue sky and some white fluffy clouds.  Willie worked a lot in the back yard and the dogs always like it when he is out there with them. As soon as he comes in they are whining at the back door, “Can Willie come out and play?”  There is quite a controversy building up about BlackRapid on DPS. Check out the review and then all of the comments. Some people are becoming skeptical about the product, including me. I am not the only one who has had problems with it. I am sorry to hear it.

Another Unknown Lily

Posted in Huntington Beach, Personal by Bridget Casas on June 15, 2009

This is my second photo this month of a lily that I do not know what kind it is. Does that sentence make sense? Well, it is a plant from my mother’s funeral 18 months ago and this is the first time it has bloomed. It is sitting on our front porch. Maybe it would like a little sun – it doesn’t get any there. Anyway, as I am sure you can tell, I took it with the Lensbaby 2.0. I tried to put the focal point at the top of the stamen but I think it is at the upper edge of the petal instead. I did not use the macro lens on this one – just the standard 4.0 aperture. One day I will learn!

A beautiful white lily…

I am just about finished with the wedding photos, and they came out really good. I did an excellent job! It has been a lot of work because I want them to be perfect. I am going to put them up on my website soon so everyone can see them. Either that or I am thinking of trying Zenfolio. New subject:  I am tired of people arguing with me and not doing what they say they will do. BlackRapid said they would reimburse me for my broken filter two weeks ago, and now they just ignore me. DirectTV won’t waive an early cancellation fee for service they were unable to provide up in Green Valley Lake. Willie was going to do a few things for me yesterday and today that he didn’t do for me. Why is everyone against me?

The First of Many Lensbaby Photos

Posted in Huntington Beach, Photography by Bridget Casas on June 12, 2009

I got my new Lensbaby 2.0 today along with the Macro Lens kit. I have been so excited in anticipation! I had to shoot something to share with you. My white orchid is starting to bloom. I looked at it this morning and thought it very pretty, but I already did a series on my orchid last year. Well, it won out for the Lensbaby photo. My actual first photo was taken looking out from my living room to a wall of jasmine and my neighbor’s roof.  Not very appropriate!

Working with my Lensbaby….

It is a little tricky finding the focal point. I ended up using the f4 aperture that was in it and I have not explored the others. I need to find out more information as to what is going on. Maybe there are some tutorials on the Lensbaby site. I did use the +4 macro lens for this image. We are going to an afternoon barbecue tomorrow for a friends birthday. Yesterday I also got an evite to another friend’s birthday on the 20th. It is at some Brazilian restaurant in Long Beach called Greenfield’s. That will be different! Have a good week-end!

June is Busting Out All Over!

Posted in Huntington Beach by Bridget Casas on June 2, 2009

In case you do not know, that is the name of a song from the Broadway show and movie named Carousel!  I have always been a fan of musicals, as everyone in my family will attest to (hey, that could be Item #6 in things you don’t know about me!). The reason the title came to me is that I have two days in a row of flowers on the first two days of June! Anyway, Willie was doing some watering this morning and I liked the way this very red geranium looked in the morning light with a few drops of water on it.

Willie was out watering the flowers this morning…

As you can see in this photo (if you read my two posts about DOF), this image has a very shallow depth of field. I like the way it blurs some of the petals on the flower and the whole background and buds. Your attention is drawn right to the center of the flower and then around, never off the page. It is a great day here today, as most days are in Huntington Beach. I spent most of the morning watching some new videos. There is a really great new one on understanding blending modes. There are a lot of adjustments you can make to images by just duplicating the layer and using a different mode. I will need to start playing with it some!

A Beautiful Springtime Lily

Posted in Huntington Beach, Personal, Photography by Bridget Casas on June 1, 2009

Larry gave me this great plant two years ago on Mother’s Day. It is now blooming again and I wanted to share it with you. I used my +4 Macro filter and I am happy with the way it came out. I did all of the post processing in Camera Raw. That is the first time I have not taken an image into Photoshop. I feel that is a step up and a big accomplishment. Of course I like the shadows and the texture of the stamen. Isn’t it pretty?

A mother’s day Lily….

I am sure this Lily has a specific name, but there are so many different ones, I do not know what it is. I just know it is very pretty. The plant is so tall, Willie has it leaning up against a ficus tree! The day started out gloomy and foggy, but ended up all bright and sunny. I took Kyla to the dog park today and she had a good time. Of course I was unable to take Donnan. I wish I could but he does not know how to behave! Making meatloaf for dinner – one of my favorites. It will be good, I know!

A Rose in My Neighbor’s Yard

Posted in Huntington Beach, Photography by Bridget Casas on May 22, 2009

Well, I could not resist this pretty pink rose. I guess this has been pink flower week! But this was in someone elses yard, not mine. There were no macro shots today! Just a wide angle zoom lens. I need to figure out a way to include the meta data in these posts, without have to copy and paste it, which I guess would not be that bad. Anyway, I hope you like this rose as much as I did when I came across it on my journey through the neighborhood.

Pink Rose_7565 copy

This rose is so pretty in pink…

Sorry for the John Hughes reference, but it applies! I was out doing some errands this morning and it was cloudy and rather humid – maybe there are some storms down in Mexico. Quite often that is when we get a lot of humidity. Donnan’s tummy is bothering him some. I feel bad that they are going to be alone a lot this week-end. We will be out in Riverside in Corona for our nephew’s wedding. It is also Larry and Shelley’s one year anniversary on Sunday. They will be up at Green Valley Lake, I am sure with a lot better weather than one year ago! Have a good Memorial Day week-end, if you are here in the USA. Otherwise, just have a great week-end whereever you are!

5, No – 6 Things That Bother Me About Blog Posts

Posted in Huntington Beach, Personal, Photography by Bridget Casas on May 20, 2009

There are a few things that bother me about how many people write their posts. I am good at playing devils advocate and finding things wrong with others. Please keep in mind that these are my personal findings:

  1. Not knowing where the author is located, the city, state and/or country
  2. Authors who do not run a quick and easy spell check
  3. It is annoying when people do not proofread their posts and they are full of many errors
  4. I like to see a little info on the photos that are posted – some people put nothing
  5. A sticky post or “about” page stating what the blog is about and why they are doing it is a plus – which leads me to a 6th thing
  6. People whose theme comes with an “About” page and they leave it blank – either use it or delete it!

Now for today’s image.

A new pink geranium in my yard…

I saw this flower this morning and told Willie I could not remember seeing it before. He said it is something he has been working on to bring back to life. He did a really good job, didn’t he? When I zoomed in on the photo to look at the sharpness, I could see a little bug, just to the left of the center, partly under a petal. I used all three of my macro filters on this one, +4, +2 and the +1. I really would like to have a Canon 100mm macro lens!  Maybe one day I will!

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Posted in Huntington Beach, Photography by Bridget Casas on May 9, 2009

It was a beautiful day today! We got a little doggy cam yesterday and put it on Donnan’s collar for a test run this morning. I think it needs to be a helmet cam! He did not take this photograph! I did. He needs to work a little on his composition, but I know he will get it right real soon! Anyway, this caught my eye at the front of a house a few blocks away. I liked the sun shining and the way it created some shadows and a range of light to dark. Let me know what you think.

In a neighbors front yard, unknown berries…

I was working on my website today to upgrade and improve it. It has been a while since I have done a lot on it. But I am making some changes and making it more CSS and user friendly. It will be probably be two weeks until the changes will be implemented on site. I hope you will check it out and I will let you know when it happens. Larry went to Long Beach with Willie this morning and he will be back here tomorrow. Kyla enjoys seeing him, Donnan just barks a lot! We are working daily on that and he is getting better. Have a good Mother’s Day!

Spring Wisteria in Bloom

Posted in Huntington Beach, Personal, Photography by Bridget Casas on May 4, 2009

I took this photo at a friends house. She has an absolutely beautiful yard, both front and back. She was telling me about the wisteria and how it just blooms once per year and only for a short time. The plant stays green until around November when all of it’s leaves fall off and it looks like a bunch of sticks. I was glad I had my camera with me so I could capture these beautiful blooms.

The gorgeous blue and purple of the wisteria plant…

I was looking at Tor Ivar’s website over the week-end and he had a photo of some crocus that were very similar in color. I don’t know why my mother did not like purple! Oh, yes, she said it was an old ladies color. I just had a call from my sister-in-law Mary who is planning my nephew Ryan’s wedding. We are going to try to get together on Thursday to make a plan for the wedding photos.  She said that Sophie has been looking at a lot of wedding photos. I wonder what she is coming up with? These wisteria would make a beautiful cascading bridal wreath!
